When Kigali is the fastest gateway to Bwindi
Flying into Kigali is usually the fastest way to reach southern Bwindi: Rushaga is roughly four hours and Nkuringo about five, versus eight to ten hours from Entebbe or Kampala. Cross at Cyanika for the southern sectors, carry an East Africa Tourist Visa and a yellow-fever certificate, and treat drive times as typical ranges rather than guarantees.

Why Kigali is usually the fastest gateway
The southern Bwindi sectors are far closer to Kigali than to any Ugandan airport. Kigali to Rushaga is roughly four hours and Kigali to Nkuringo about five, versus eight to ten hours or more from Entebbe or Kampala. That is why many time-conscious trekkers fly into Kigali and cross the border rather than driving across Uganda.
From Kigali the drive is roughly 115 to 119 km of paved road to the Cyanika border (about three to four hours), then around 43 km of partly rough road to Rushaga or Nkuringo (about one and a half to two hours). Treat all these as typical ranges, not guarantees; border queues and wet-season mud can add time, and a 4x4 is recommended.

Choosing your border crossing
Cyanika is the shorter, more direct crossing from Kigali to the southern sectors and to Mgahinga. It sits a few kilometres from Kisoro town and is open seven days a week, roughly 06:00 to 19:00, so it does not suit very early or late crossings.
Katuna (Gatuna) is the alternative. It operates 24 hours, which helps for early or late travel, but the road route to the southern sectors is a little longer. For most southern-sector trips Cyanika is the natural choice; confirm current border hours before you travel, as they occasionally change.
Visa and health basics
For a Kigali-in, Uganda-trek routing, the East Africa Tourist Visa is usually the convenient option: it is reported at USD 100 for multiple entries across Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya for 90 days. A valid yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Uganda from Rwanda.
Treat visa prices and entry rules as official-source details to confirm close to travel, and check the current requirements for your nationality before you rely on them. If the trip is Uganda-only, a single-country Uganda visa may be simpler than the multi-country option.
Fly in or drive?
Domestic flights are the alternative to the long road. Aerolink flies from Entebbe to Kihihi, which serves the northern sectors (Buhoma and Ruhija), and to Kisoro, which serves the southern sectors (Rushaga and Nkuringo). The flight is about an hour, with a road transfer at the other end.
Flying raises transport cost but saves fatigue and can save nights. If you are already routing through Kigali for the southern sectors, driving over the border is often the simplest and cheapest option; if you are Entebbe-based and short on time, a domestic flight can be worth the premium. Confirm current schedules and whether Kisoro service is scheduled or on-request.
