What the Uganda permit includes

Current UWA permit guidance says the gorilla permit includes the guide fee, park entry for the tracking day, and the community development contribution.

UWA also says each permit holder gets a one-day free entrance to Mount Elgon National Park and Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve within one month before or after tracking. That extra entrance does not cover separate activity fees in those parks.

How Uganda booking works in practice

UWA currently says that all gorilla and chimpanzee permits for foreign non-residents and Rest of Africa travelers can only be booked through licensed tour operators.

UWA suspended the previous seven-day reservation window from 1 March 2026. A permit is now secured only after full payment at booking, so confirm the date, sector, traveler category, and payment route before money is sent.

If you are traveling on fixed dates, treat the permit as the first item to lock before you optimize lodges, road transfers, or safari add-ons.

Rules that directly affect planning

Current UWA guidance states that the minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years old, the maximum group size is eight visitors per gorilla group, and visits are limited to one hour with the gorillas.

In practice, these are not fine-print rules. They affect who can travel, how scarce permits feel on the ground, and how you prepare for the actual tracking day. The same rules also state that visitors should not track while sick and should avoid flash photography.

Trek duration, fitness, porters, and mobility support

Current field guidance for Uganda is to allow roughly two to six hours for the whole standard outing, depending on where the assigned family is that day. Once the gorillas are found, the standard viewing limit is up to one hour. Basic fitness is required even on a shorter assignment because the forest can be steep, muddy, and uneven.

A porter currently starts at USD 20 for the day and can carry a daypack and help on difficult ground; the final price can rise with distance and trek demands. Travelers who cannot safely complete the route on foot can pre-arrange a porter-carried sedan chair. This is locally nicknamed the "helicopter" but is not an aircraft; field pricing starts at about USD 300 and rises with distance and the support required.
