How Rwanda booking works

Visit Rwanda says gorilla tracking can be booked directly online, linking to Irembo and to the Rwanda Development Board booking portal (visitrwandabookings.rdb.rw). On the RDB portal you pick an available slot, upload the required documents, and pay; the system then issues the permit automatically. Bookings are first come, first served.

You can also book through a licensed operator. Keep the direct official route separate from packaged operator pricing, so you know which part of a quote is the permit. An operator quote or availability answer is not a permit: only the RDB-issued permit is.

Availability is tighter than many travelers expect

Visit Rwanda states that there are twelve fully habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park, eight permits per troop per day, and therefore 96 permits available each day.

That limited daily supply is why Rwanda rewards early, date-specific planning much more than casual browsing does. The shorter drive from Kigali does not change the fact that permits can still tighten quickly.

What the Rwanda permit actually buys

Visit Rwanda describes the experience as a morning briefing at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi, ranger-led tracking, and a strict maximum of one hour with the gorillas once contact is made.

The hike itself is still variable. Your total walking time depends on the assigned family group and where that group is on the day.

RDB's portal sets the refund rules: if the group's movement stops you tracking for the day, you get another chance or a full refund; if you track all day without reaching a family, 75% of the fee is refunded. There is no refund for late arrival, flight delays, or cancellation.

How to think about discounts and special offers

Rwanda has two kinds of official reductions. First, category-based promotional rates on the RDB portal: USD 200 for Rwandan and East African citizens and USD 500 for foreign residents in Rwanda and for African citizens or foreign residents in Africa. RDB states that these promotional rates do not apply from June to October 2026. Second, a 30% low-season discount from November to May for trips that combine the gorilla permit with qualifying paid nights and an activity in Akagera and/or Nyungwe (one discounted permit per person per qualifying stay).

The planning-safe reading: USD 1,500 remains the default international benchmark. Treat a reduced price as real only if your category or itinerary clearly qualifies on the official RDB page, or your operator can show the current official offer that matches your trip.

Common mistakes to avoid

• •Reading any discounted Rwanda figure as a universal public tourist rate when the official benchmark is still USD 1,500.
• •Assuming the USD 200 or USD 500 promotional rates apply to any date: RDB excludes June to October 2026.
• •Treating the November–May low-season discount as automatic: it is 30% off only with qualifying Akagera or Nyungwe nights and an activity.
• •Treating rumor-level figures such as a public USD 600 rate as confirmed before you see the current official category or offer in writing.
• •Assuming the permit guarantees an easy hike; terrain still varies by assigned family.
• •Waiting too long because the drive from Kigali is shorter and therefore the trip feels easier to plan.
• •Forgetting to confirm minimum age and traveler category before purchase.
