Rushaga is the largest of Bwindi's four sectors and typically has the most habituated gorilla families, which is why it usually carries the most daily permits. More families means more daily capacity, so Rushaga is often the sector where a specific date is still available when Buhoma or Ruhija have sold out.
It is also the sector where guides can more realistically match a group to a trekker's fitness on the day, because there is a wider spread of family locations to choose from.

Difficulty and access
The terrain in Rushaga is hilly, steep, and often muddy. It sits between Buhoma (easier) and Nkuringo (toughest): physically demanding, but manageable for reasonably fit trekkers who use a porter and pace themselves.
Access is the other reason Rushaga is popular. From Kigali it is roughly four hours via the Cyanika border, far shorter than the eight to ten hours from Entebbe or Kampala. Kisoro town and airstrip are the nearest Uganda access points.
The gorilla habituation experience
UWA's guidelines allow up to four hours with the gorillas on the Gorilla Habituation Experience, rather than the standard one hour. It costs USD 1,500, and UWA's notice raises the foreign non-resident rate to USD 1,800 from 1 January 2027. According to Adroa Travels, our commercial partner (August 2026), it currently operates only from Rushaga and is limited to four visitors per day; UWA does not publish that sector restriction or daily cap.
